Crossed the ocean to America at age 18 in a sailboat, taking 42 days to make the trip. Married Frances Habig (Born October 25, 1844, died July 15, 1887) in Cincinnati, Ohio, where first child was born. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Union army and was home only once in three years. He was with Sherman's March from Atlanta to the sea. At one time he helped make a sham raft from boards and barrels and towed it down the Mississippi River. When it was found to make the trip safely, the men followed on another raft. After the war, he, wife, and baby lived in Moscutah, IL. for a short time. Then they moved to Perryville, MO. where he built a stone house, now still in use (1970) but none of the family live there. Our family lived there several years during our school years. He was a cooper by trade and made flour barrels and shaved hoops for the old Perryville Mill.
