Notes for William Tallmadge Hurtt: There is a question about the birth date of Wiliam - different sources have different dates. According to his daughter Ada (or possibly her daughter Zell Gould), William was born on March 21, 1842. His Obituary in the Sycamore, Ill., True Republican gives DOB as March 22, 1844. This information was probably given to the paper by his wife or one of his children. William's age given on the Birth Cert of his son Perry is 47. Perry was born on March 19, 1889. If we assume that Perry was born within 2 or 3 days of William's birthday, and that Perry on his delayed Birth Cert rounded his father's age up those 2 or 3 days, William would have been born in 1842. The enlistment records for William when he joined the Union Army show that he was 17 years of age on July 06, 1863 - this would have made the year of his birth 1846. With all of these dates and years given for William's birth, the most accurate seems to be:
Day and Month: March 22. This information was given by family members who knew him personally.
Year of Birth: 1846. The information was given by William himself (his age of "17" on 06 Jul 1863); however, his brother George Washington Hurtt, is recorded to have been born on 10 Mar 1846. If true, William had to be born no later than 1845.
There was an Act of July 28, 1866 by which the estate of persons who died as a result of injuries suffered while in the service of the USA during the Civil War would receive a bounty of $100. This bounty was to be divided evenly by the minor children of the veteran. There was an application for this bounty by William's brother George Washington Hurtt on 31 Aug 1867. An application for "an equal share" was filed by William W. Wilson, PJ for William Hurtt. In this application it is stated "At the time of the passage of said act, William Hurtt, another son of said decedent, was a minor, but he was of full age at the time of the application and was not named therein,..". This would mean that William was under 21 years of age on 28 Jul 1866 but over 21 years of age on 31 Aug 1867. To do this, his birth year would have to be 1846. I do not know how to explain how George W. Hurtt could have been born on 10 Mar 1846 except that it is wrong information.
I do believe that the above facts establish that William was born in 1846.
There is, of course, still some question about William's DOB.
The Obit gives his Date of Death as January 05, 1898 which is the same date recorded in the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Childrens School - pages 32 & 33, numbers 164 & 165.
William's middle name "Talmadge" was from information from his grand daughter Zell Gould - daughter of Addie (Hurtt) Marriott. This has not been confirmed by any other source.
