About Our Family Research

The Baldwin family of Charles County, Maryland started from our Union Civil War hero, Charles Baldwin, born in Smyrna, DE and military records say his parents were Stephen and Emma Baldwin. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valiant acts, while serving on the USS Wyalusing in an action against he rebel ram Albermarle in 1864 in the Roanoke River. I have never proved them in any other document. Charles came to Virginia as a bachelor after war and was soon married (1867) to Levenia Cleaves in Caroline County. They had 2 children, Randolph and Ida in Wakefield, Virginia and showed up together in 1900 Census of Washington, DC. Ida was married to Frank Raymond with small son and Randolph (born 1875) was still unmarried. This husband and son did not live. Randolph and his father, Charles, were listed as ship carpenters. By 1910 Randolph has married Sadie Elliott, a Charles County girl, but is living a few miles away in Prince George's County, Maryland as head of family with 2 small children and his aging parents. By 1914 this family is growing and living in Fenwick, Charles County, Maryland in a tenant house owned by the Elliott's. The 1920 census finds the Baldwin family in their own home in Pomonkey, Charles County, Maryland. All of this is documented forward to 2003. My main area of interest is the parents of Charles Baldwin (Stephen and Emma Baldwin). Where did Charles grow up? Who were his siblings? Charles joined the Navy in Philadelphia in 1864 at age ca. 25. His marriage record says he was married 1 time. It also lists parents as Stephen Baldwin and Emma, his wife. Oral history also states that Emma was a Cherokee Indian and that Stephen Baldwin worked for the the Goverrnment regarding Indian Affairs. Where are these ancestors of mine? The 1870 Census finds Charles and Levenia Baldwin in Lancaster County, VA. They had a son, who did not live. 1880 finds Charles Baldwin age 39, wife Levenia age 34, Randolph age 5 and Ida age 7 in Washington, DC. If there were other children, they did not live? Oral family history says that Charles Baldwin was working on the George Washington birth place in Westmoreland County, VA at the time of his children's birth and growing up years. Charles was a sailor, ship carpenter and always around water. Please help. Judy
