This is the family tree of the three IAIA brothers - John (Giovanni) - Joseph (Giuseppe) - Arthur Gino (Arturo Gino) - who immigrated (during a period 1910-1920) to the U.S. from Pontecorvo, province of Frosinone, region of Lazio, Italy. Sadly, this research was undertaken after all three had already passed on and is based on the few records each had retained plus records that this genealogical search uncovers. The only known IAIA relatives in the U.S. was the family of Antonio Iaia of Altoona, PA.,also recorded with this tree. Pontecorvo takes its name from the 'curved bridge' on the river Liri. It is located south of Rome only a few miles from Monte Cassino. The bombardments of WW II destroyed most of Pontecorvo and with it many of the records. However 15 roles of microfilm records of the Stato Civile (available from LDS in Salt Lake) do reflect the birth-marraige-death records of approx 85 all named IAIA dating back to circa 1765. These records cover the period from 1860 to 1900 only. Prior records, if any, were kept by the local parish churches and most were destroyed. This family Tree encompasses six (6) generations - Arthur G (self)- Arturo Gino (father)- Benedetto (grandfather) - Giovanni Vincenzo (great grandfather) - Giuseppe (great great grandfather) - Francesco Giovanni (great great great grandfather).
Currently there are over 700 IAIA families located throughout Italy. The majority are from the Puglia region. I am attempting to locate any surnamed IAIA in Italy who has roots in Pontecorvo in order to determine where that first IAIA progenitor, who settled in Pontecorvo, came from, as well as the origin and meaning of the surname IAIA.
