I am trying to research my family who came here from Hungary during the 1800s. My great grandmaother came here with her mother when she was 7 years old. I've been told many stories by my grandmother, great uncle etc. having to do with the family. I've learned that when she first came to Ellis Island, she thought the Americans were trying to poison her because she had never had some of these foods. I learned also that her mother was a peasant and father a merchant. My great great grandfather refused to leave his estate to come to America because he was such a wealthy merchant. And last of all, when my great grandmother would getoverly excited she would speak American and slowly converge into speaking American and Hungarian at the same time.
