He was in the National Guard and served in Alaska when called to active duty during World War II, wounded in an accident which caused him to lose a finger, and left shrapnel in his chest or abdomen, which contributed to final fatal illness. Buried in Columbus Cemetery in Columbus Arkansas. Nick named "Dunie" by his dad.
