The name Turner is English and means "turner of wood" (they were carpenters). Martha Turner lived during the Civil War. She was left to fend for herself when her husband went to fight in the Civil War and told of digging up the floor of the smoke house and rinsing the salt from the dirt to have salt for curing meat.
