Joseph died sometime after the age of 14 of an illness. His mother rocked him for about two days as he lay unmoving, and finally his father ripped him from her arms, telling her he was dead, and buried him in an unmarked grave in the family cemetery on the old home place. His mother always swore he wasn't dead because he never got cold. It is possible he was really only in a deep coma. (The old family cemetery is on the Boyce land now owned by Randy and Tom Phillips after first passing from L.K. Boyce Sr. to Nannie Boyce Phillips)
