Our family came from France in the mid 1600s. The original family farm is still in the family. There is a Mathieu Family Association headquartered in Quebec. My branch of the family was involved in the revolt against British rule in Quebec in the 1830s. My GGgrandfather, Francois Xavier Matthieu, smuggled guns accross the border from New York into Canada. He escaped with the help of a Dr. who was related to Dr. John McLoughlin the "Father of Oregon". F. X. Matthieu (spelling of last name changed when he escaped to the United States, was an accountant. He traveled the West of North America including Santa Fe and then joined the original wagon train to Oregon at Ft. Laramie. He and another French Canadian were the two individuals who determined the vote to divide the Oregon Territory between English and American rule. Later he became a U. S. Marshall and State Legislator. He was the last survivor of the vote.
