My people of Janina

Updated July 14, 2008

About Our Family Research

A ship load of people who were my relations left Pareus, Greece in 1907 or 1908. They were Sephardic Jews who left when the Ottoman Empire was braking apart. Most of these Jews migrated to New York and lived on the lower East side of New York. We were a very close knit family and we were encouraged to see our granparents, aunts and cousins most every weekend. My mother's father Max Joseph was a Cantor in a synoguge and was devoutly religious.

There is a "Home" where the Sephardic who became too old to care for themselves went to live. It was called the Sephardic Home in Brooklyn, New York. All my dead relatives including my mother and father have their names on the walls in this home. It is an honor to see their names. It's like they come back to life.
