Still looking for Thomas Jenkins's ancestors. I've registered the family name in the 'Ohio Genealogical Society' (OGS) as 'First Families in Ohio'. Certificate number 1690. A family must be located in Ohio prior to 1820, and ancestry must be proven, to be eligible for this honor. Any relative that can prove descent may acquire their own certificate from the OGS. Thomas, his wife Nelly Sisk, along with their son Russell and his wife Polly Kite, share this historical event. The family migrated to Mad River Tp., Champaign Co, OH in 1806 from Shenandoah Valley, VA. They were of the first settlers to build a cabin there along Owen's Creek. They are mentioned in 'Beers History 1881 Champaign County, Ohio', pg 714 and in 'History of Champaign County, Ohio 1917' by Evan P. Middletown. Other members of this family are recorded here also.
Russell was a private in Captain Philip Kiser's Co., Col. John Dougherty's Regiment, Ohio militia in the 'War of 1812' from Sep 1812 to Oct 1812. He was honorably discharged and later granted 40 acres of land. His second wife, Sarah Long, received a widowers pension until her death. Russell has been certified as a soldier in the War of 1812, by the 'General Society of the War of 1812'. Certificate # 4913.
Russell was also the executor in the estate of his father Thomas Jenkins who died in 1830.
