Colonel Stephen Shirley and his son James Shirley were the first white people to visit the Cumberland Mountain. There was a Cherokee family living there. This was on the trade trail. The family was the "Nettle Carrier" family and James Shirley married the daughter of Nettle Carrier, who was named Hannah Thacker Ward. This branch of the family was rumored to be at lease seven feet tall. The Osborns and Copelands were included in this family branch.
Not much has been found on the Clarks. John Walter Clark is the son of John Hardy Clark, who is the son of Hardy (Blank) Clark. They may be from either the Virginia area or North Carolina. Tennesee and North Carolina were one state for awhile and I have been unable to find anything on them. John Walter Clark lived with the Sanford Stamps family and worked on their farm. He married Sarah Elva Stamps, Sanford's sister.
