Harston Amyx, also called Hans Ammich came to Philadelphia on the Brigantine Sally on 9-17-1750. The ship contained 25 passengers and was captained by Mr. Hasselton, who was from London. Harston and his wife Mary ___ had four children of record: Nicholas, (who had 14 childdren), James, Phillip and Matthew. (It appears that Harston was German) Matthew married Catherine ____ and had 5 children of record after he fought in the American Revolution. During the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina, Matthew was shot in the left arm, between the el bow and shoulder and lost the use of that arm. He received a pension from his home state of Virginia due to his disability. Several of the pension documents have different spellings of the name, Amicks is one of them. John Boyd was a friend of Matthew and fought with him in this battle. John's daughter Sophia married Matthew's son Peter, which is where our ancestry begins.
Peter later moved to Kentucky. His father soon followed. During Peter's life as a surveyor, he owned much of N. Eastern Kentucky up to Cincinnati. He lost most of this property due to its size and lack of control over squatters. Peter was the first Legislature Representative for Kentucky as far as we can tell.
Different spellings that have cropped up include Amyx, Amicks, Amacks, Amix and a few others that are much less common. There is record of a Thomas AMIS who came to Virginia in 1638 but he appears to be no relation

Children of JOHN HARSTON AMUCKS are:
  1. +MATTHEW D. AMICKS, b. Abt 1715, Yeoman,Germany, d. 10 April 1779, Botetourt, Co,. Virgina.
