My surnames from Kentucky: Hampton and Abney, Sims and York Updated August 23, 2012
About Our Family Research
My parents, grandparents, and at least great grandparents were from Rockcastle County and the surrounding areas of Kentucky. My generation is mostly from Indiana and Ohio since they started migrating to Ohio and Indiana in the 1920's and 1930's. I'm hoping to connect with cousins or others who have information about my family and ancestors.
My Dad's family had a lot of tragedy and I would like to find out more about all the accidental shootings, murders, and other causes of death. My Dad's name is Jasper Franklin Hampton (1900-1988). He had 12 siblings, a couple of which supplied me with a bit of information before they died.
My paternal grandfather was John Franklin Hampton married to Tilitha (Abney) Hampton. Tilitha's parents were Andew Bilge Abney and Eliza Ann (Owens) Abney. Although I have information on the Abney's, I would like to know if anyone has the name of Eliza Ann Owens' father married to Phoebe Owens. No one seems to know who the father of Phoebe's children were.
My great grandfather was Pleasant Hampton and his first wife was Drucilla (Ballinger) Hampton. I can't find much information on Drucilla (my paternal great grandmother). I do have Pleasant and Drucilla's marriage information. She died young and left 6 children. Pleasant Hampton remarried Sallie Ann (Cates).
My great, great grandparents were Clayborne or Laben Hampton and Stacy Ann. I can't find her maiden name, but one person thinks it might be Logsten. I've hit a brick wall looking for Clayborne Hampton's parents and Stacy Ann's parents. Claybourn's parents MIGHT BE Laban Hampton and Leany (Stephens) Hampton, but I can't find a definite link. Can anyone help me?
Now to my maternal side: My Mom was a Sims and her mother a York = my grandparents: Sidney Sims and Eliza Jane (York) Sims. Grandma made a trip to Arkansas in a covered wagon as a child. Two or three of her siblings died on that trip. The names of my maternal great grandparents were Christopher "Kit" York and Diana (Estridge) York. My great, greats were William York and Nancy Fender. I have some further information on back for these ancestors.
I have been using Ancestry.com for about a year now creating a tree mainly on the Hampton surname. I would like to get in touch with anyone who has knowledge of my kinfolk.
Where is the best place to do research in Kentucky (at the county level, or at Frankfort)?
Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated. I might already have just what you are looking for, and vice versa.
