A John Keating was my gggg grandfather. He ran away from home. He was killed in a butcher shop in La. He was either the cop or the butcher we dont know. He had a son named James Wooten Keating. His mom remarried and the new husband did not want James. They sold him into slavery on a Mississippi river boat as a child. At 16 he escaped and joined the circus as a cooks helper. The cook abused him and burned him on the back with a hot skillet.
He went to Texas to drive cattle up the Chism trail. 2 years later he was on a drive and the cook was the old circus cook. James told him to draw. The cook died. He later married, owned land and had a son William Savage Keating. His middle name was savage because his mother was Cherokee Indian. One day they heard a turkey outside. Williams mother said thats no turkey thats an Indian. Williams father went outside and got in a gun fight with his brother in law who was mad his sister married a white man. The brother died. William S. Keating Married and settled in Texas. He was a farmer and a lawman. He had five boys Bill, Earl, Paul, Bob, and Hugh. Hugh was my grand father who settled in El Centro Ca. with his wife Mable. They owned businesses and farm land and Hugh was elected Constable and later Justice of the Peace. They had Hugh Lee Keating Jr., my father, and Lila my aunt.
Hugh Jr. Married Carla Irving and was a police officer in Covina Ca. He retired as a chief of police. He works for the Feds now. They had 3 sons Mark (died at 9), Matt, and me Mike. I married Joellen Masters and have 9 children Justin, Jeremy, Jacob, Joseph, Jesse, Ellie, Jed, Anna, and John. I am a policeman like my fathers.
