The maternal side of my family is the basis for my family history. We are a Scottish-Maryland family since about 1724. The first immigrant was a Scottish Minister, James Macgill born in 1701 Scotland. He resided and maintained his church in what is now Howard County Maryland. Both his home and Church still exist. The home is an upscale restaurant know as the Kings Contrivance located in the Athol area of Howard County. His Christ Church is nearby and is a Maryland Historic Landmark.
Reverend Macgill of the Church of England is the main subject of a book titled "The Macgill - McGill family of Maryland a Genealogical Record of over 400 years Beginning 1537 ending 1948." This book was compiled by John McGill of Washington D.C in 1948. The book traces the ancestry of over 3,000 persons mostly with roots in the Metropolitan D C area who are descend from Reverend.Macgill.
Tracing the Scottish heritage back from the Reverend Macgill we run into the Stewart family that included the Stuart line of Kings that were preceded by Robert de Bruce aka King Robert 1st. The life times of our royal ancestors included the years of the active wars between Scotland and England. Several of our ancestors were executed by the English Edwad kings in the cruelest of fashion as a result of asserting and fighting for the right to rule an independent Scotland.
The family of Makgill appears to have originally come from Galloway, but the immediate ancestor of the present family was Sir James Macgill, who was the provost of Edinburgh during the reign of King James V.
I am unaware of any individual or organized persons researching the history of this famous Scottish family since the death of the above mentioned John Mcgill to whom I remain indebted for the forgoing Macgill history. I am unaware of any family reunions or other activities centered around the Macgill - McGill descendants.
I am a licensed Maryland CPA no longer in practice. For most of my working career I was a Special Agent of the FBI and spent 30 very interesting years with the Bureau in a wide variety of assignments and locations.
