Elizabeth Diane Nelson was born and raised in Lancashire, England. Most of her mother's immediate family originated in small towns and villages in and around Lancashire. Elizabeth's maternal grandparents are from the Great Harwood/Whalley/Blackburn/Burnley area, and we have been able to trace the Birtwistle line back to the year 1151. Elizabeth's mother's paternal grandfather's family with the surname of Mayor are from the town of Croston in Lancashire. Elizabeth's G.Grandmother with the Surname of Burke is from Bray in Co. Wicklow, Ireland.
Elizabeth's father George Nelson was born and raised in Preston, Lancashire. His ancestors were born in many counties including Somerset, Northampton, Wales, Cheshire, Cumberland, and Lancashire. The family it seems must have had some gypsy blood, and travelled a great deal thoughout England, Scotland and Wales. Actually they worked with the railway and travelled wherever there was work.
John P. Kelly Elizabeth's husband, was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. John's paternal family (Sullivan and Kelly) immigrated from Caherciveen, and Anascaul, in Co.Kerry, Ireland around the 1890's. They (Kelly's) settled originally in Waterbury, Connecticut, and (Sullivan's) in Brattleboro, Vermont. John's mother's family names are Badger,Brown, Kramer/Cramer and Menard. They settled settled in Holyoke, Massachusetts in the 1880's and 90's and originate from Germany, France, New York, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Canada. There is supposed to be some Native Anerican blood, but as yet we have to find it.
