Notes for Thomas Edward Deegan Kelly: Thomas was born Thomas Edward Deegan. There were at least four children born to Tom's father, Edward Deegan and his mother, Nora Sheehan Deegan. Thomas was the oldest, then Michael Deegan, Margaret Deegan Vallely and John Deegan. Tom's father, Edward, died on November 27, 1906 and Baby John died in March of 1907 at four months of age. Tom and Michael were sent to St. Francis Industrial School in Eddington, Pa.. Margaret (Mazie) went to West Philadelphia Industrial School. This was a Catholic Boarding School run by the Sisters of Good Shepherd. In 1917 Nora married Michael Kelly. After graduating from the school, Tom returned home. He had become a master craftsman and worked at RCA as a cabinet finisher. Later he worked at the same plant as his step-father at Brills Motorcar Company in Philadelphia. During this time Tom changed his name to Thomas Kelly. At one point in his life, he and a friend traveled out West and became land prospectors. They gave it a try; but the cold winter and rocky soil were more than they wanted. They gave up the land and returned home. For many years Tom worked for Gene Masterson as a house painter. Because their work was so exceptional, most of their jobs were on the Philadelphia Main Line. He met Florence Gee at a luncheonette called "The Greeks" at 58th and Woodland Avenue where she was a waitress. Florence had been married before and had three children. Tom and Florence soon married and had six children of their own.
