Augustine was a farmer. Records seem to indicate that he lost his farm in the 1850's and his occupation changed to day laborer. Between 1838 & 1842 he was the Burgermeister of Herrischried. Augustine's brother Xaxer was Burgermeister from 1842 to 1847.

Around 1850 a government commission was set up to investigate the poor conditions in the village of Herrischried. The climate was not good and the soil poor. The government decided to pay the transport costs to anyone who wanted to leave and come to the US or Canada. During the 1850's about 800 of the 3200 people left the village. Three of Joachim's brothers and one sister left at this time. This was also around the time that Augustine lost his farm. Joachim was just a child and stayed behind. He left Herrischried when he was of age. He went to Stuttgart for a few years before coming to the US. There is a record in Stuttgart from 1862 of a Joachim Kohlbrenner being nominated as a postal clerk there.
