Notes for George Kohlbrenner: George landed in New York on November 20, 1854 aboard the ship "Charles Hill". He also moved in with his brother Fridolin at 533 Callowhill Street for a few years. He was an upholster by trade. He was a member of the German Turner Society, a German- American athletic and social organization based in St. Louis with a chapter in Philadelphia. In August of 1861 the Turners formed the 17th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Union Army), made up of their German-American members from their chapters across the Country. George enlisted. They were known as the "Western Turner Rifles" and took a prominent part in the following battles:
Pea Ridge- - March 6th, 7th and 8th, 1862; Searcy Landing, Arkansas-- May 19,1862; Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi-- December 28, 1862; Arkansas Post, Arkansas-- January 11, 1863; 14 Mile Creek, Mississippi-- May 12, 1863; Jackson, Mississippi-- May 14, 1863; Vicksburg, Mississippi-- May 22, 1863; Canton, Mississippi-- July 17, 1863; Lookout Mountain-- November 24, 1863; Missionary Ridge-- November 25, 1863; Ringgold, Alabama-- November 27,1863; Resaca-- May 12; Dallas-- May 28; and Kenesaw Mountain; and in the grand campaign against Atlanta-- July22nd to July 28th, 1863; and Jonesboro-- August 31, 1863.
The Unit's military records contain a description of George. He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, with auburn hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. His father, Joachim, was also a short man, so perhaps Fridolin and Philip shared the same build.
After the Civil War, George married Bertha Paulina Kupfer in 1867 in the same Lutheran Church as his brother Philip. They had three children: Emma, Eugene and Edwin. George died in 1900 at the age of 64.
