My Great-Grandmother was a Kelly from North County Kilkenny who married a Mr Murphy from Cregg Bridge, Whitechurch in South Kilkenny. One of their sons, Michael Murphy in 1910 married my grandmother who was a Miss Ellen Kelly of Garnarea, Piltown, County Kilkeeny. One of their daughters, Agnes Murphy married Robert Kelly of Irishtown Kilkenny in 1942 and they were my parents. Over three generations a Kelly married a Murphy and so three different Kelly families from different parts of County Kilkenny contribute to my family tree.
Of the three Kelly families in my family tree only those from Garnarea (also Garrynarea), Piltown, Co. Kilkenny came to the US. Three Brothers, John, Martin and Michael and their sister Mary Kelly emigrated to Worcester, Mass in the 1880's from Garnarea, Kilkenny, Ireland. John and Martin married and raised families in Worcester. They worked in the lumber business. Two of their brothers remained in Ireland, Patrick and James. Patrick married Mary Butler of Ballyhenebry and James married her widowed sister Johanna Butler Ryan but they has no children. Patrick and Mary Kelly of Garnarea had two children, Ellen (my maternal grandmother) and Patrick Joseph Kelly who emigrated to New York in the early 1920's. Patrick Joseph Kelly married in New York and he and his wife had one son and five daughters in New York. My grandmother Ellen Kelly of Garnarea married Michael Murphy of Cregg Bridge, Whitechurch, Co. Kilkenny. Michael Murphy's mother was also a Kelly from Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny. Michael and Ellen Kelly Murphy of Garnarea had 11 children including my mother Agnes who married my father Robert Kelly of Irishtown, Kilkenny in 1942.
