Our family originally came from Cheshire, England (the largest amount live in this area from around the world).
The spelling of the family name varies such as, Kennerley, Kennerly, Kenerley and Kenerly.
Do believe the name is derived from a town in Devon County - anciently Kenwardleigh, then called Kennerley and now Kennerliegh.
In the middle ages, when people began to leave their local communities and settle in nearby cities and towns, it was convenient for them to be identified by reference to the villages and small parishes from whence they came.
A Kennerley reference in the Cheetham Society Publication Chester Court Rolls page 209 Maccesfield Hundred 1285 - Roger de Plat del Kennerley, a free tenant - not attending - Fined. He must have had land in Cheshire and from the form of the spelling of his name could (?) have come north from his native village in Devon.
Many Kennerley's are mentioned around Cheshire in the 1500's.
