History - Ancestry - Descendancy: The origin of the English surname, SAUNTER is derived from the Old French "sanz terre" which means "without land". As soldiers and followers of their King many a battle was fought against the French, some of the followers may have settled in France, whilst others would have returned to England. A John Sancherre and John Sanzherre are recorded in 1260 Assize Rolls of Cambridgeshire and other spellings such as Sanherre, Sauthere appeared in 1275 Lincolnshire documents. During the French Revolution period an Antoine Joseph Santerre (born 17520 a wealthy brewer of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, was appointed in June 1792, Chief in Charge of the National Guard of Paris. On the 10th August, 1792, he served against the Verdeans, was arrested after the defeat and released after the Thermidor. He died 1809. (Reference: M.J.
