Notes for Royland Watson Barns: \Royland Watson Barns was born in f\Footscray on march 17 1894. In his early days was a blacksmiths striker at Barnett Glass and Rubber Co. this entailed him hitting the work held by the blacksmith with a large sledgehammer , after this he was a grease monkey , having to grease and look after all the machines in the shop , later he became an S P [starting price] bookmaker. During the First World War he was called up by the labour force and worked for Borthwicks Meats he retired when he was 29 and continued as an S P bookie ,he married Ruby Mary Riley on the 25 January 1911[the daughter of George Albert Lees Riley and Amy Ellen Burge]Royland and Ruby had four children, Ruby May ;Royland George ; Vera Muriel and Nellie. Ruby Mary died on the 30 november 1940 and Roy later remarried Elsie Mathias he died on 11 th april 1975 aged 81.While working for Barnett Glass he was caught in an overhead shafting by a piece of rag in his overall pocket and finally fell to the floor with only one boot and no sock and on the other foot no boot but a sock all his clothes torn from him, he suffered a broken leg and while in Melbourne Hospital he took a ticket in Tatts and won 100 pounds . He represented Victoria as a bream fisherman for theAngling Club for many years and was an original member of tha Victorian Anglers and the Tattersalls club
