Legend has it that the original family name was KILLEEN but when Patrick & Winifred, who were both born in Ireland, settled down in Heworth, County Durham, England the local Catholic schoolmaster got them to Anglisice their name by dropping an “e” from the spelling to make the present name of Killen.
Patrick's parents William & Bridget Mullony were from Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. Patrick was born circa 1829 and emigrated to England about 1852 where he married Winifred Gray on 10th May 1856 in the Roman Catholic Chapel at Felling Shore, Heworth, County Durham. Their seven children were all born in Heworth and baptised in the local Roman Catholic church.Winifred's parents Francis and Ellen Flanelly were from Kilmacshalagan, County Sligo, Ireland.

Patrick's brother Thomas, born cir 1831, married Margaret Anna Hart. Both were both born in Ireland; all their eight children were born in Heworth, County Durham and baptised in the local Roman Catholic church. His other brother John, born cir 1822, married Anne McCoy and they had at least 2 sons William, born 1850 in Lanchester, Durham and James, born 1853 in Heworth.
