KIRKS FROM VA/TN/ SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Updated January 17, 2005

About Our Family Research

Several cousins have worked together to extend our knowledge back to TN and VA. We do not have good information on country of orgin. Best guesses are Scotland or Germany. It starts with Samuel Kirk in Grayson County, VA in 1794. He bought a Treasury Warrant for 172 acres on Knob Fork of Elk Creek. We believe that he came from Lunenburg County where a Samuel Kirk married an Edith Bowen and lived for 30 years. In "1790 heads of household survey" Samuel Kirk had 10 people in the family. He sold or transferred land to children in 1792 and does not show up in future years.
A year before Samuel, a Henry Kirk bought a Treasury Warrant for 200 acres on Elk Creek. He maybe related but there is no evidence.
The Harrie Washington Kirk segment of the family gets together annually in August for a reunion.
