About Our Family Research

Frank Henry Koch and Martha Wells Koch homesteaded on the Belle Fourche River near Moorecroft, Wyoming in 1913. They had 8 children, plus Samuel Leo who Frank had by a former marriage with Rachel Clarke.

Frank came west from Illinois at age 18, first to the Black Hills where he herded sheep near Dewey, SD and then to Wyoming where he worked for the Z-Bell Ranch, the 101 and the Bar T. For many years he was known as the Bar-T-Kid. During the time of Wounded Knee he carried messages for general Miles and General Johnson. He was the first Deputy Sherrif of Campbell County.

He married Martha Clara Wells on October 28, 1899 at Hot Springs South Dakota. Their marriage certificate spells his last name as Koach.
