Simon Straus (son of Matthias Joseph Straus and Elizabeth Petry) was born June 01, 1858 in Lieg R.B. Coblenz, Germany, and died December 03, 1940. He married Anna Straka on November 25, 1885 in St. Nazianz, WI, daughter of Johann Straka and Margaretha Dumas.

Simon was the youngest of 7 children, 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret Straus. Margaret was a doctor in Germany. Four brothers, Joseph, John, Jacob,and Peter. Simons' father, Mathias was a linnen weaver and died when Simon was seven yars old. Simon was a coal miner in Germany and was burnt in a mine explosion. He and another miner were the only two who survived the explosion, as they were working close to the entrance of the mine. They were told if there was ever an explosion of fire in the mine they were to cover their face. This was the reason for the deformed ear and hand. Simon left Germany from Hanover on app. May 11, 1879 at the age of 20, He turned 21 on the ship, on the way over. He landed at the Port of New York, on June 9, 1879 abord the ship "S.S. City of Chester." His permision to leave document was dated June 5,1878, Port of entry unknown. His Declaration of Intention was filed in Marathon County WI on October 30, 1884. Phillip Strauss (oldest son of Simon) was the first Strauss, born in this country, to use (SS) on the end of his last name. All the Straus's born in Germany spelled their name with only one S on the end of their last name. Simon Straus did never return to Germany. He had intended to visit his family in 1935, but did not go due to the threat of war. The records in Germany pertaining to Simon Straus and his brothers and his sisters were lost in WW2.
