View Tree for Anna StrakaAnna Straka (b. April 04, 1869, d. December 26, 1943)

Anna Straka (daughter of Johann Straka and Margaretha Dumas) was born April 04, 1869, and died December 26, 1943. She married Simon Straus on November 25, 1885 in St. Nazianz, WI, son of Matthias Joseph Straus and Elizabeth Petry.

 Includes NotesNotes for Anna Straka:
Anna Straka was born in Hayton, WI. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Gregory's in St. Nazianz as there was no Catholic church in Hayton.
Anna and her husband Simon Straus (#110) lived on a 40 acre farm. The income was not enough for the family so Simon went to work in St. Nazianz at the colony of the Salvatorian Fathers and just came home on the weekends.
Anna's children were two and a half years apart. Her smallest baby was 12½ lbs. After Philip was born, Anna and Simon sent his mother in Germany, a Picture of Elizabeth, Maggie, Katie, Rosie, and Philip. It's said that his mother died with that picture in her hand.
Anna's children Maggie, Katie, and Lizzie (Elizabeth) went to work in Evanston, Illinois when they got older. That's where Maggie met Frank Martin who lived in Waldo. He turned Catholic for Maggie and they were married in St. Nazianz. They moved to Ladysmith right after they were married.
The land in Aniwa belonged to Simon. It had a little log cabin on it. Elizabeth and Rosie lived there together with their husbands for a while. In the winter the men worked in the logging camps.
An example of how Anna helped her neighbors:
Frank Lax (pronounced Lux) had an infected arm. The doctors wanted to amputate but Anna thought she could save it. Throughout the night she covered it with warm cow manure. He was in much pain but toward morning he finally fell asleep so she knew she had conquered the fever. Later in the morning she noticed, by a finger, that the skin had broken and pus just ran out. She then applied Simons salve and it was healed. They wanted to build a little chapel to the Blessed Virgin in thanksgiving. One day when Anna was walking through the woods, she noticed a little lamb. She followed it, but it disappeared. Right where it disappeared they built the chapel. Every Fourth of July they have an open house there (Mass).
