 Includes NotesNotes for Ottilie Strauss:
Ottilie Strauss married Louie Luchterhand on October 24, 1921 in St. Nazianz, WI. They were married in the priest house as Louie belonged to the Ebenezer Reformed Church.
They lived on an eighty acre farm for seven years after they were married. It was at this time that they joined the Lutheran church in their area.
In October of 1928, they moved to Milwaukee, WI for a year. Louie did factory work while they lived there. Their son, Eugene, went to school there for one month when they moved back to the town of Chilton, WI. They moved to a different farm which they farmed for twenty one years. Then Louie had a rupture and couldn't lift heavy equipment anymore so he had to give up farming. They rented the land
but continued to live in the house.
Louie went to Chilton to work at the Aluminum Specialty Plant. After four or five years, the sold the farm and moved to Chilton in November 1952. Tillie then went to work at this same plant and worked there for 24 years until she retired at the age of 75.
When they moved back to Chilton, Tillie joined the Catholic Church again. She also had the children rebaptized and they went to the Catholic school. Louie also joined several years before he died.
Louie had a heart attack around 1961. He was out of work for several months. He then worked for six years before he had a fatal attack right at work, January 20, 1967. He was 65 years old at this time.
Kenny was eleven and Allan was thirteen when they moved from the farm. Eugene, who was sixteen years old when Allan was born was twenty-nine when they moved.
Eugene went to work at the aluminum plant. He worked there for five years when he was laid off because they didn't have enough orders. He worked at Rod and Reel until they went Bankrupt. Then he started to work for the city where he worked for 22 years. He did everything--mow lawns, haul gravel, help blacktop roads, supervised a skating shanty, and drove a snow plow.
Allan worked for the city for 15 years. In 1962, they discovered he had diabetes. He was on pills first, then insulin. He always had to watch his diet. He had many health problems throughout his life.
When he was around six years old, he had rheumatic fever. Because of the high fever, it did some damage to his heart. He was not able to go to school that year. When he was eleven years old, he lost a kidney. There was some bleeding in the kidney which the doctor said was caused by a tumor so it had to be removed. While in the hospital,
he also had his tonsils removed. He was at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton for 39 days. Tillie stayed right at the hospital with him.
Because of Allan's diabetes, he had a running ulcer in his right leg. Finally his toe turned black and he had to have the leg amputated seven inches below the knee. Later the other foot broke down; the arch just exploded. The cold weather in Wisconsin did not agree with him so on August 10, 1988 he moved to Arizona.
Kenneth was in the army. He spent two years in service and two years in the reserves. He is deaf in one ear. While in training, a howitzer shell did not go off. He went over to check it and then it exploded causing his hearing loss. He spent 18 months in Germany as a mechanic for big trucks. He still works as a mechanic.
