Don Spaso Korunic
Don Spaso Korunic was born in 7 May 1891 in the village of Smokvica on the island of Korcula, on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia, today the Republic of Croatia (Hrvatska).
His father was Frano (Franjac) Korunic, and his mother was Frana Korunic (maiden Pecotic). Don Spaso had a borther and three sisters. His brother's name was Ivan and he immigrated to the USA where he live and died. His sisters were Mara, Frana and Ivica. All three were married and had children in Smokvica and have passed away.
Don Spaso finished school in Smokvica and went to high school from 1903 to 1911 in Kosljunu. He studied Theology in Dubrovnik from 1911 to 1915. He graduated as a priest on the 10 August 1914 in Dubrovnik, when he made his first mass.
His first parish was a the village of Cara on the island of Korcula. A couple of years later the bishop transfered him to the town of Trpanj, on the spur of Peljesac, where he served as a priest, aswell in a few other villages in the area.
Through out his life he was always happy and helpful to others. He loved to music and was always singing. He also loved being with the young people in the town, advising and talking to them. My grandfather, Franko Korunic iz Plaze, always used to say, "Don Spaso is a very good man and a very good priest.", and my whole family was always very happy when they knew he was coming home. He loved astronamy, and used to talk alot about stars.
Don Spaso died as a young man, at the age of 55, from a heart attack, on the 2 July 1946 in his home village of Smokvica.
He was burried in the graveyard inside the church. His sister Ivica Pecotic and his nephews put the tombstone next to his grave.
