The Kouhi Family

Updated February 5, 2001

About Our Family Research

The Kouhi family has roots leading back to 1667 in Kauvasta, Finland. From these roots, the family has grown. Now, we can be found in Finland and Canada.

The search continues! There are still many missing Kouhi's waiting to join the family tree.

The KOUHI name is very unique.
It's meaning in Finnish is said to be an explanation of a feature of land.

The Kouhi name is also popular in the Middle East, where it means "top of the mountain". Family legends say that the Finnish Kouhi's travelled with Vikings to the Middle East and brought the name south.

The name Kouhi also has Asian connections. In Japanese it means "queen".

Often lightening will strike a big tree, creating a split part of the way down the trunk. The tree does not die, but continues to grow. Nourishment is taken from the common root and feeds both trees at the same time.

In the mid 1700's the same thing happened to the Kouhi Family tree. Jaako Heikinpoika Wahtari Kouhi and his wife Brita Matintytar shared the family farm with their two sons. Jaako Jaakonpoika, the older son, took the lower portion of land and became known as ALA-KOUHI. The younger son Antti Jaakonpoika took the upper portion and the YLI-KOUHI portion of the family was created. Over time the "ala" and "yli" were droppped and the families both kept the KOUHI surname.
