 Includes NotesNotes for Irene Allen:
Irene was the "baby " daughter of Evelyn Enfinger Allen Tyre. She was named after Evelyn's sister Irene Enfinger DeBeauford. When Irene Allen was small her Dad, Lanie Allen would call her "Pinky" I recently asked one of her sister's how Irene got that nickname. She said she really didn't know why, but it was just something their dad called her. I know when I was small and would go over to visit , and sometimes spend the weekend with the Allen family, I was "pinkie's" shadow. I can remember spending the night one time, and Aunt Evelyn gave us a bath together, in a big round washtub. Uncle Lanie, sat it in front of the fireplace, which to me looked huge in size. He started a very large fire, so that we would not get cold while taking our bath. Aunt Evelyn got several pot's of water hot on the wood stove, then poured them into the washtub. Being very carfull not to get the water too hot, so we wouldn't get burned, there was also cold water from the pump outside added. Once we had gotten a good scrubbing and our hair washed, were were rinsed off with warm water still in pots and on the woodburning stove. A towel was wrapped around each of us, as we were lifted out of that washtub. We had our p.j.'s put on us and was allowed to curl up on a pile of blankets and homemade quilts, to sleep. I was about 4 years old then, and can still remember it like it was yesterday.

After Uncle Lanie passed away a few years later, and Aunt Evelyn met Earl Tyre. Earl and Aunt Evelyn married, and then they moved out to California for a few years. Earl was in the Armed Service, Navy I think. I just know that I missed going to see and spending the night with them. During this time frame, we all grew up and lost contact with each other. When Earl retired from the service, they all moved back to Aunt Evelyn's house in Milton. It was the first block house across the railroad track on the left hand side of Ravine Street. By that time all of us were into other activieies with school, and the older girls, Mary Lou, Laretta "Retta", and Ann were all dateing. Irene "pinky" and I also now had different interest, so we never really got back together.

Irene later in life had a battle with cancer of the cervix. This was treated, and she went into remission. A few years later the cancer reappeared, again she had surgery and treatments. Once again she went into remission. The last time it reappeared, it was in the brain, and after a long hard battle, the cancer won. I remember the last time I saw "Pinky" alive, was in January 2001, at Lewis Funeral Home in Milton at her Mother's visitation. Who knew then that in just eleven months we would be back at Lewis Funeral Home, for her Visitation.

The following is taken from the Pensacola News Journal December 30,2001.
