Labee in search of the Guerin family roots from Louisiana

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

My name is Theonie Labee. Since my fathers death I have really taken a fascination to learning about my family tree. My father was a Labbee at birth. In his younger years the spelling of his name was changed to Labee. He told me that the spelling of his name was changed because of all the caucasian and/or cajun people in Louisiana did not want to be associated with any one of color. My great-great-grandfathers name was Mathew Guerin. His mother had a relationship with the plantation owner. My great great grandfather was of a very light, pale complexion. A lot of people let him pass as a white man. His father gave him around 25 acres before he died. Mathew started strawberry farms which are still popular down in Louisiana. Any information you might have on the Guerin, (Gurain) family would be very much appreciated. Thank you and may God bless you.
