  There is a popular tourist area near the border with Wales, west of Gloucester, called "The Royal Forest of Dean" which was established in Norman times. My ancestor, William Dean, was born bef. 1580 in Chard, England south of that forest. There is an ancient earthwork in the forest at "Littledean Camp" thought to be the location of the old "Castle of Dene" from which the forest takes its name. There is also a "Littledean Hall" in the forest said to have been built by the Romans to celebrate their defeat of the famous Celt warrior, Caractacus, in 43 AD. It is said to be the oldest dwelling in England and haunted.
