Philipp Lahm, the paterfamilias of this clan, was born in Fielbingert, Germany on November 21, 1864. He was the middle of three known children of Philipp Lahm (?-1870), a blacksmith who died when young Philipp was 6 years old, and Anna Marie Roth. Philipp Lahm immigrated to the United States in 1880. He came first to Philadelphia to live with his uncle, Jacob Roth, his mother’s brother. The Philadelphia Roths were fairly wealthy. The uncle owned a merchant tailor shop. However, Philipp apparently was not happy in Philadelphia. He came to visit a cousin, Adam Lahm, in St. Louis and liked it so well here, he decided to stay. Both Adam and Philipp were bakers and when they would be out of work baking, they would go to work in the fields of Nebraska. Adam met a young woman there, who later became his wife, and they remained in Nebraska.
Philipp met and married Wilhelmina Hofmann in St. Louis on December 1, 1885.
