William Penn McPherson's paternal grandparents are the mystery of the 20th century for his genealogy-minded descendants! They were Duncan McPherson, born in the Scottish highlands, who came to North Carolina, U.S.A., at the age of 23 (family lore) and married Sarah (surname unknown), who was born in North Carolina.
Family lore also tells us that Duncan left a castle behind--a clue which we have largely ignored as wishful thinking, but after a quarter of a century of searching for this elusive couple, we will follow any will-o'-the-wisp lead! Anybody got any unclaimed castles sitting around?
Duncan and Sarah had two sons that we know of, born in 1813-15 in North Carolina. The boys, John Templeton McPherson and Randal McPherson, married Sibina Holiday and Hannah Hadley, respectively. Both girls were Chatham County, NC natives and of Quaker families, so their migration route was easily traced, from NC> IN> IA> NE.
But Duncan and Sarah.....?? They are never heard from again, save indirectly in later census records for the John T. McP family, where they are listed as his parents.
