About Our Family Research

I have been researching my grandfather's family, Balsom. My great grandfather William John Balsom, Sr. came from Tavistock, Devon, England. He married Mary Grace Perkins in Tavistock on August 1, 1863. They had three daughters, born in Tavistock, Lucy Pierce, Mary E.P.(Polly), and Flora. The family came to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1869, settled in Old Saginaw near Negaunee, Michigan. William was a stone mason, he did stone work for the mining companies in the U.P. They moved to Norway, Michigan where four more children were born. Eliza, Emma,William,Jr. and Rose. William again did much of the stone work necessary for the iron mines in the vicinity. The girls married, raised families and lived in Norway and Iron Mountain, Michigan. My grandfather, William John Balsom, Jr. married Anna Jane Semmens and lived in Iron Mountain. He was a blacksmith and later the first custodian for the new Iron Mountain High School.
I have a copy of the marriage cert. for William, Sr. and Mary Garce from St. Catherine's in London, England.
