Research began in Mid 1980's by a cousin, Ila Chastain of Merced, Ca. We believe the family to have come originally from Tennessee, during the movement of the 5 civilized tribes from that area to the Mid-west, settleing in northern Arkansas and So.West Missouri. Records from Hamilton County Tennessee have been lost during Civil War period, but we believe William Latty, and Susan Abernathy were married in Eastern Tennessee about 1846 or 1847. He having been born in Tennessee about 1827. and she in North Carolina about 1828. William, and a brother Jefferson are believed to have served in the Confederate Army out of Little Rock. William is believed to have died about 1908 in Arkansas, and Susan about 1912 in McDonald Co. Missouri. They had 9 Children, Mary J. born in 1848, Nancy E. born in 1849, Amanda E. born in 1851, James W. born in 1855, John W. born in 1856 (my own great-grand father), George Lawson, born in 1860, Sarah CAtherine born 1865, Margurite Caroline born 1866, and Francis Lucinda, born in 1870......In her book "William Latty: Hills of Tennessee to the Missouri Ozarks", Ila lists 942 descendants for 8 generations. We've had reunions in June for several years in Lanagan, Missouri, where these folks setteled after the war. There is still a contingent of the family living there. Now, we are trying to find the earlier family. We can find, at this point, nothing prior to the births of William & Susan. My youngest, Shon Wesley was stationed in Hawaii (Honolulu) with the Coast Guard, and his wife met a woman from Jamaica, who claimed to be descended from a Latty-Bordeaux who was originally from France. I've been able to locate nothing to confirm this as being part of our family. We've had others state that they thought our family to be of either Irish or Scotish origin. I would relish any contact from a Latty who can shed light on our earlier family.
