The Lawrence Family of Hampshire and Wiltshire, England

Updated January 23, 2006

About Our Family Research

The Lawrence family came from the Winterbourne villages just north of Salisbury in Wiltshire. They came from a long line of agricultural labourers. In the mid nineteenth century they moved to the growing port of Southampton and settled in the St. Mary's district.

My mothers ancestors were also agricultural labourers from the Kent and Sussex borders near modern day Tunbridge Wells. By 1841 James J May, my great grandfather had moved to South London and was working on the railways. Two of his children joined the army and moved to South Shields where they married local girls. Around 1880 my great grandfather, Richard May, returned south with his wife, Margaret Robson. The family set up home in Southampton.
