JOHN HENRY NIELAND arrived in America in 1869 at the age of 17. Here, he was called Henry. He followed in the footsteps of his older sister, Anna Nieland, who had emigrated a few years earlier. Later, another sister, Angela, also emigrated. All three siblings married, settled in Carroll County, Iowa and raised families.
Henry Nieland was born in 1852 in Sudlohn, a small town in Westpfalen, Germany. His parents moved the family to Ramsdorf after their children were born. In 1875 Henry Nieland married Anna Berning, a young woman who was born in Iowa. Together they had 5 children.
Following Anna's death in 1883, Henry married Anna Koster, who had also emigrated from Germany. As Henry's wife, Anna Koster Nieland gave birth to 11 children.
At the time of his death in 1949, at the age of 97 years, Henry Nieland had more than 175 living descendants. By the year 2000 that number had grown to more than 1500. The Nieland Family Homepage (see Related Links below) is dedicated to sharing the rich family history of the Nieland family in America.
