Welcome to this site! Laws is an uncommon name. I married into the family and was thankful for the shortened last name; easy to spell and pronounce. For years the family thought they were the only Laws family in all of Washington State. Over time, and with the use of better computers and search sites, I slowly discovered there were plenty of other families with the Laws surname out there and curiosity got the best of me. I traced the origin of the name to the Scottish Clan MacLaren. This discovery sparked a fire in my husband, Christopher, and myself to find out more about our family's history! My father-in-laws's great-aunt, who lived in Kansas, shared with a few relatives one Christmas that she had unearthed the family roots as far back as the early 1600's. She claimed that they came over from England, settled on the east coast at lease through the Civil War era, in mid 1800's. So we had some "framework" to start with, and off we went! We discovered some interesting facts, such as: the same Laws family member, who lived in IL., fought for the North in the US Civil War, TWICE. At some point the family, Daniel and Grace Laws, moved to Kansas to farm. Later, family members headed out to California at the turn of the 20th century. Christopher's grandfather, Derald Milton Laws Born 6/17/1920, was a California rancher. Our goal in putting together these trees and stories is to give future Laws generations information about their family. Something they can hold in their hands regarding who they are. We are also hoping to connect with other Laws and exchange information. This web-site is an attempt to connect the dots and complete a full history of the Washington State Laws family to their fabled origin: England,Scotland, and...? Enjoy! -Shannon Laws
