Espoused the cause of Matilda of Anjou (1141-54) and fortified his castle of Dunster. Rebelled against King Stephen. With King David of Scotland he besieged Henry, Bishop of Winchester and is said to have been created Earl of Dorset by Matilda. He founded the priory of Bruton in Somerset.
