Descendants of the Mormon's (Morman; Moorman) of Arkansas

Updated April 2, 2001

About Our Family Research

I believe that we are descendants of Zachariah Moorman; from the
Isle of Wight. I am just beginning my research trying to tie
my immediate family to this line of ancestors. I can trace my
immediate lineage to William Hillsman Mormon who served in the
Civil War. He was wounded in the battle of Chicamaugua on the
side of the Confederates, I believe on the first day of the battle. He was later taken to a prison somewhere in Illinois
until the end of the war. He was later pardoned. His son, My
grandfather was James Franklin Mormon, he married Mattie Courtney of Dermott, Arkansas. My father, Joe Dixon Mormon was
the youngest son of James Franklin. The other sons were Homer
Mormon of Wilmar, Arkansas who married Florrie ( ). They had
Dumah, Frank,Lois,Hermena, Royal Dan ,Claudine, Scottie, and Sue,
My father had another brother James Thomas Mormon who lived in
Warren, Arkansas. He married Elizabeth (Ellis). They had Mary
Alice, Geraldine, Maxine, James (Buddy), and Lawrence (Jimmy).
My father had one sister Emma Bell who married a Reemes. She
raised her family of one son Harry Wayne Reemes in Monticello,
Arkansas. My father Joe Dixon Mormon married first Avris Sawyer,
he had two sons by this marriage, Donald and Jimmie Lee Mormon
were children born in this first marriage. Avris died from a
black widow spider bite when my brother Jimmie was a small baby.
Also Jimmie's brother, Donald died from Dyptheria when very young. My father then married Mildred Fern Brantley and I was
born in this marriage on July 17, 1935. My surviving brother
Jimmie married Flora Waldrip of Monticello, Arkansas. They
had two children, Randal and Suzanne. I married Bobby Wesley
Lochala and had three children by that marriage. James Michael
Lochala, Sherrie Lynne Lochala, and Stacey Carole Lochala, all
living. We had family reunions which I remember as a little
girl outside of Hamburg, Arkansas at a place known as Mist.
Some of the other relatives spelled their names Morman. All I
heard is that the name was changed down through our lineage, I
am not certain why. I have been in contact with other relatives
that have a spelling of Moorman but am not certain who my Great,
Great Grandfather was. The names of Franklin, William, James,
and Michael have followed this family for years. I would be
very greatful for any help on this matter.
