Notes for John Lowry: In tracing the Lowry's, I started with only what I had been told as a child by my parental grandmother Mary Etta McConnell Lowry Morris Sharp. Her first husband was William Pinkney Lowry, she told my sister and me much about the Lowry's, but we managed to be confused by the facts, the first being that we thought our grandfather was William Pinkney Logan Lowry.
When I started searching, I was looking for William P (or P. L.) Lowry, b in TN in 1870. The first time I found him I discounted what I had since in script it appeared to be William J, rather than William P, I later came back to this census, the US 1880 Census of the 16th Civil Dist, Knox County, Tennessee. Page No. 28, S. D. No.1, E. D. No. 154, starting on line 1 enumerates: Lowry, P. L., W, M, 45, works on farm, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia; America E., W, F, 38, wife, Keeps house, Tennessee, VA, VA; George A., W, M, 21, son, works on farm, TN, NC, TN; John W., W, M, 20, son, works on farm, TN, NC, TN; Laura V., W, F, 19, dau, at home, TN, NC, TN; Sarah E., W, F, 14, dau, at home, TN, NC, TN; Amercia E., W, F, 12, dau, at home, TN, NC, TN; William P., W, M, 10, son, working on farm, TN, NC, TN; Manevy C., W, F, 8, dau, TN, NC, TN; Henry, W, M, 4, son, TN, NC, TN.
This led me to look for Pinkney Logan Lowry, or P. L., or P., in the 1870 US Census and the available Indexes: as a result of this, in the 1870 US Census of Sevier County, Tennessee, page No. 9, in the 12th dist., on the 3rd line is: Lowry, Pinkney, 36, M, W, Farm laborer, b in NC; America, 30, F,W, Keeping house, TN; George A., 13, M, W, Farm laborer, TN; John W., 11, M, W, Farm laborer, TN; Laura V., 9, TN; Sarah E., 4, TN; America E., 2, TN; William P., 1/12, [Apr], TN.
The 1860 US Census shows in Greene County, Tennessee: Pinkney Lowry, 23, M, Farmer, North Carolina; America, 18, F, TN; George W. 2, M, TN; John W.,4/12, TN.
Subsequently I found in earlier census' the following:
1850 US Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, the 13th District, 8th day of Nov. 1850 on line 17; John Lowry 46 VA.; Sarah 48 VA.; Mary 20 NC; Robert 18 NC; Adaline 15 NC; Pinkney 13 NC; David 10 NC.
1840 US Census, Surry County, North Carolina: John Lowery; males, three un 5, one 5 un 10, three 10 un 15, and one 30 to 40; females, one un 5, two 5 un 10, and one 30 to 40.
1830 US Census, Iredell County, North Carolina: John Lowery; males, two un 5, one 5 un 10, and one 20 to 30; females, one 5 to 10, and one 20 to 30.
I have not been able to determine anything further as to date or location of birth, marriage, or death of John or his wife Sarah.
