Includes NotesNotes for Joel Bird Harrison:
The 'Alabama Source Book' Vol. 1, 1964, compiled by Flora Dainwood England, FHC Library #976.1 A58e, contains 'Perry County Marriage Records 1920-1839' which, on page 245, lists the following; Joel B. Harrison to Mary Price, 11 Sept. 1826. [My mother, Harriet Madonna Harrison Lowry and her mother, Mary Matilda Redfield Harrison drew up a penciled family tree which indicated Joel Bird Harrison married Mariah Price, daughter of James L. Price.] On page 135 is a list entitled 'Heads of Families in Perry County, Alabama -1830 Census'. On page 140 is: Harrison, Joel B. 60 (refers to the page number of the census).

The 1830 US Census for Perry County, Alabama enumerates, on page 60, as head of household, Joel B. Harrison and indicates: two males, one under 5, and one 20 under 30; and one female 20 under 30.

The 1840 US Census for Marengo County, Alabama, page 36 lists: Joel Harrison with one male under 5, one 10 under 15, and one 30 under 40; along with six females, four under 5, one 5 under 10, and one 30 under 40.

Apparently Joel B. Harrison was not enumerated in the 1850 US Census, however, the 1855 Alabama State Census showed a J. B. Harrison in the Dublin Beat with three males under age 21 years and one over 21 years along with two females under 21 years. The 1850 Mortality Schedule lists Maria Harrison, age 15 in Perry County.

In the 1860 US Census Joel B. Harrison was enumerated on the 12th day of July, in Dublin Beat, Chestnut Hill, Perry County, Alabama. He was shown as 58, a farmer, born in N. C. and was listed with the following [all born in Ala.]: Rachel A., 20, domestic; Sylviz, 23, domestic; Geo. W., 13, attended school within the year; Benj. F., 10, attended school within the year; and John W., 26, a farmer.

In the 1866 Alabama State Census Joel B Harrison was enumerated in Perry County, T21 R11E with two males under 10, two males 10 to 20 and one 60 to 70, two females under 10 and one 30 to 40; George Washington and Benjamin Franklin could be the 10 to 20's and Joel B the 60 to 70, the remainder a second family, since it appears that 'Mariah' died prior to 1855. This Census showed, under the category of Soldiers that one was killed and one died of sickness, this accounts for John W and another male born prior to 1840.

The 1870 US Census enumerated a Benjamin, 20, on 1 July in Dublin Beat, Plantersville, Dallas Co.

In the 1880 and 1900 Census George W. was in Perry Co., Heards Beat [No. 10] on the 9th and 1st of June respectively, Rachel Ann, his sister was with him in 1880. His widow and a number of descendants were enumerated on the 4th of May,1910 in Beat No. 10, Perry Co., Alabama.

Benjamin, his family, his relatives and those of his wife moved in the 1880's to north eastern Texas in the Maud-New Boston-Corley area of Bowie and Cass Counties.

Joel B. Harrison patented approximately 340 acres of land in sections 13 & 24 in Township 20 North, Range 10 East, St. Stephens Meridian two to three miles south west of Stanton, which is now Chilton County, Alabama. The patents were dated November 15, 1853 and November 1, 1858. At the time this was in Perry Co., but was in Dallas Co. in 1870 and Chilton Co. in 1880.
