Notes for Richard Redfield II: Notes from "The Redfield Family Genealogical History", by John Howard Redfield; a revision and extension of the genealogical tables compiled in 1839 by William C. Redfield Richard was an axe maker,his axes obtained a high reputation, and were known far and wide as the "Redfield axes ". He resided successively in Vermont, New York, Canada, Indiana, and Illinois.* He married first, Phebe Loper of Newark, N.J.,and second, Mrs Lucy Brown. He died at Rushville,Illinois on March 26,1851,aged 83. *This case affords a characteristic example of the progressive propensity of "the universal Yankee nation", Richard Redfield was born in Killingsworth, Connecticut, went early to the town of Mendham,N.J. where he learned the trade of axe maker, of a Mr. Conger, and married his first wife. He then removed to Addison County, Vermont and while in that county resided successively at Bridgeport, Middlebury, Shoreham,and Vergennes; thence he removed to Madrid, St. Lawrence County, N.Y.; thence he crossed the St. Lawrence into Canada;thence he removed to Odensburgh,N.Y.; thence to Elbridge, Onondaga County, N.Y.; thence to Sodus, Wayne County,N.Y.; thence to New Albany, Indiana; thence to Rushville,Illinois, where death gave him his last removal, March 26, 1851.
