He enlisted in the US Army and served overseas in the famous Persian Gulf Command. His regiment spent their time unloading war supplies from ships docked in the Persian Gulf at Iran and trucking them across the mountains of Iran to the Russian allies in northern Iran. When Buck finally returned to the states, he was stationed at Camp Lee in Petersburg, Va. He met Ada Eloise Warner, b. 22 Jul 1917, d. 19 Sep 1991, in Richmond, VA and fell in love. They were married 9 Aug 1945 and settled in Richmond. Buck worked as a truck driver for Brooks Tranfer and Storage until 1954 when he went to work as a long distance truck driver for RC Motor Lines. He worked for RC out of Richmond until 1972 then transferred to their Tampa, Florida terminal from where he worked until his retirement at age 60 in November 1976. Buck and Eloise then moved to Chassowitzca, Florida where they lived until 1987 when they moved back to Richmond to live with their son Jerry so they could be near their grandchildren. They had three male children: Jerry Wayne Lusk, born in Richmond, Gene Edward Lusk, born in Milan, TN, and Michael Lynn Lusk, born in Richmond. As of 2010, Jerry and Michael have never married.
