Lycett's of West Bromwich

Updated April 12, 2011

About Our Family Research

I am tracing my Grandfather's line. CHARLES LYCETT. Born 25 March 1898.

He was born and lived in West Bromwich until he married Ethel Ponter on 24 December 1921. His parents were THOMAS LYCETT and CLARA LYCETT (nee Adams). From what I have learned so far he was one of about 10 or 11 children - Florence b 1890; Alice Marie b. 1892; Thomas Henry (Harry) b. 1896; James (Jim) b. ???; Louisa b. 1901; Nellie (Eleanor) b. 1903; Harriet May (May?) b. 1908; Dorothy b. 1912; There is also another sister that my dad said committed suicide - I have come across the name Charlotte.

Below is more information of what I have researched so far:

STANLEY LYCETT - Father of Linda Lycett

Parents: Charles Lycett b. 25 March 1989 died 6 May 1974 age 76
West Bromwich

Ethel Ponter b. 12 January 1899 died 17 April 1980 age 81
Wolverhampton

CHARLES LYCETT

Parents: Thomas Lycett b.1867 died. 1930

Clara Adams b. 1868 West Bromwich
d. approx 1921 age 53

Siblings: Florence b. 1890
Alice Marie b. 1892
Thomas Henry b. 1896
James b ??
Louisa b. 1901
Nellie (Eleanor) b. 24.6.1903
Harriet May b. 1908
Dorothy b. 1912

There may be a FRED or a FRANK to discover yet and another who committed suicide - I have a Charlotte somewhere.

All appear to be born in West Bromwich, England. Don’t know if the addresses were the same. I need to see the Census for 1901 and 1911 -

HARRY LYCETT (Thomas Henry) b. 1896
Married Gertrude – 1 son, 1 daughter. Died in 30's –40's of lung cancer caused by poison gas from 1st World War. (there could be a death cert we could chase up with all this info on it).

JIM LYCETT
Married Evelyn. 1 Son. Lived in West Bromwich area.

MAY LYCETT
Spinster. Dad thinks she was a nurse.

LOUIS (Louisa? Have to find out if male or female) b. 1901 – if so.
Married. Lived in Abingdon. 1 Son?

ALICE LYCETT
Married Jack. Lived in Dolgelley (not spelt right!). N. Wales. 1 Son

Dad didn’t see his grandparents very much – a couple of times. He remembers when he was about 5-6 years old. His grandfather's name was THOMAS LYCETT and they lived in Spon? Lane, West Bromwich. – Seems the Lycetts' moved around a bit. Maybe that’s where I get it from!!

He said there was one sister that committed suicide in a canal, but none that he has mentioned. (Suppose we have to glean the info on that one!) He also says that his grandparents were not talked about very much when he was around (the skeleton in the closet?)

THOMAS LYCETT – Charles father – b. 1868 West Bromwich, England d. 1930 West Bromwich. age 62

Married March 1890 CLARA ADAMS b. 1868 West Bromwich
d. 1921 approx. age 53
Have more info on Adams side.

Siblings: Carmi b. 1865
Alice May b. 1867
Thomas b. 1868 (Charles father)
Enock b. 1870
Harriet b. 1872
Harriot b. 1878
from 1881 Census STF piece 2884 folio 96 pg 34

I have a little info on THOMAS LYCETT'S parents – Charles grandfather

They were: Thomas Lycett b ? Christened 15.12.1839 St. Matthew, Walsall

Married: Seppy Parkes b. 1843 Walsall.

Next problem is that there were TWO Thomas s' christened that same day so need his birth cert to find his parents (that’s Thomas and Seppy bit).

Parents #1: Thomas Lycett & Phoebe Harper
Parents #2: Robert Lycett & Elizabeth

From my current investigations, Thomas and Phoebe look promising, considering that the fathers name usually went through the generations – Thomas has been used in 4 generations so far. I have Christening date and Marriage date for Thomas/Phoebe but nothing so far on Robert/Elizabeth.

Any info or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
