Our pioneer, Duncan McLeod, with his brother John, emigrated from Clanranald lands, Inverness County, Scotland. Very likely they came from the Isle of Eigg sometime in the late 1820's.

They first settled a few lots east of present day, St. Margaret of Scotland Church on River Denys Mountain, Inverness County, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. A monument now stands at the church in their memory and the memory of all the pioneer settlers. They later resided on Dunmore Road, in Port Hood and lastly in Mull River. All the descendants of Duncan McLeod and his wife, Isabelle Gillis, departed Cape Breton for the Boston States, some moving westward to Montana and the State of Washington.

We are actively researching the following surnames:

McLEOD, MacISAAC, MacFARLANE, MacDOUGALL, MacINNIS, MacDONELL, GILLIS and BEATON.

Our MacIsaac and MacFarlane ancestors both came from Glen Moidart, Inverness County, Scotland. This is also within the bounds of Clanranald lands. In the year of 1801, they arrived aboard different vessels, the Nora and Dove respectively. Within a short time they both settled at South River, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Our family lines later moved onto Broad Cove Banks and Margaree Harbour, Cape Breton and later, some went onto Bay St. George, Newfoundland.

We have significant research data on hand and would love to share information with anyone researching Catholic Highlanders, in Inverness County, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Bay St. George, Newfoundland and indeed, from Clanranald Territory in Scotland.
